CLASS SUMMARY:

This position performs routine maintenance and/or operational activities in assigned area of responsibility. Depending on assignment, typical duties may include: providing customer service; performing routine tests, maintenance, and repair of grounds, vehicles, equipment, infrastructure, plant, public areas, and/or related items; operating motorized vehicles, equipment, and/or plants; inputting data into computerized systems; preparing logs and records; and/or, performing other related activities.


TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

1.

Performs routine tests, maintenance, and repair of parks, streets, playgrounds, vehicles, equipment, underground utilities, public areas, and other facilities and structures; work may involve Identifying, troubleshooting, testing, adjusting, and repairing minor problems in assigned area of responsibility; and notifying appropriate individual(s) of problems requiring advanced troubleshooting and/or repair. Operates a variety of general and specialized tools and equipment in performing repair and maintenance activities, including jet trucks, hand and power tools, pressure washers, and/or dump trucks; checks for adequacy of tools and materials; notifies appropriate individual(s) regarding lack of equipment and materials. Provides customer service by often serving as the first point of contact, and providing assistance and information to the public regarding ongoing work. (A1)

4.

Prepares and maintains logs and records of daily activities; and inputs data into computerized systems. (A1)

5.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. (N/B)

FUNCTIONAL SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Positions assigned to Operations may be responsible for:

  • Locating underground utilities; work may involve using hand digging tools and repairing underground pipes.
  • Maintaining and repairing streets, including sidewalks and curbs, to include removing and replacing brick pavers, and patching potholes.
  • Changing water meters and meter boxes.



TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.


LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

Depending on assignment, may require valid Texas driver's license.


KNOWLEDGE:

  • Applicable tools and equipment of the trade;
  • Basic mathematics;
  • General maintenance principles, methods, and techniques;
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions;
  • Applicable Federal, State, and City laws and regulations.

SKILLS:

  • Performing general labor and maintenance in assigned area of responsibility;
  • Operating applicable tools, equipment, and machinery;
  • Preparing and maintaining basic records;
  • Reading and comprehending manuals, specification, drawings, and blueprints;
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other sufficient to exchange or convey information.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions, such as, mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibrations; atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation; hazardous materials, such as chemicals, blood, and other bodily fluids; extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; work space-related movement restrictions; intense noise; and other environmental conditions, such as, challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environments; incumbents may also be expected to travel.
